European rights court rejects Italian appeals on surrogate children

ROME, June 22 (Reuters) – The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rejected on Thursday a number of appeals by Italian same-sex and heterosexual couples who challenged national restrictions against the recognition of children born abroad through surrogacy.
Surrogacy is banned in Italy, and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing government has targeted gay men who use it to have children, even though the practice is more common among heterosexual couples.
